ABOUT

My name is Emma and I am currently living in England. Fount of Flow is a collection of my poetry which is rooted in the Christian tradition and also includes themes from nature and Buddhism.

Throughout this site you will find poems and photographs which are all written and taken by me. The photographs are taken on a 35mm film camera in a variety of locations, from retreat centres and spiritual communities in Europe, to North Africa, Israel and Palestine. I have paired photographs and poems together to encourage a fuller sense of the feelings cultivated when I wrote each poem, and to help embody a deeper connection to that feeling through a combination of visual and written arts.

Why Fount of Flow?

Over the past year, I have felt increasingly inspired to pursue my creativity. This has developed into a regular practice of writing poetry, practicing film photography, and painting oil paintings. This allowed me to recognise a state of ‘flow’ which I have come to know well.

This flow state is not unique to me but something that has been documented in spiritual, artistic and neurodiverse experiences for centuries. Personally, it is a state I enter when I become undistracted, hyper focused on the feelings evoked by whatever has inspired me, and consciously cultivating that feeling into something new: a poem, photograph, or painting.

Therefore, because of the role of flow states in developing my poetry practice, it felt important to include the word ‘flow’ in the title of this project. It is preceded by ‘fount’ which is a nod to the pen and the pinprick of faith which my poetry is cultivating.
